The story below is one I wrote several years ago. I read it this morning at church. I offer it to you tonight. A Faraway Christmas by Milton Brasher-Cunningham As we gather together on this Silent Night, To sing ‘round the tree in the soft candlelight, From a Faraway Christmas, from time…
My family moved to Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia in 1957. Back then, that required sailing on a passenger freighter from New York to Beira, Mozambique, which took thirty-two days. I turned one in the course of the journey from Texas to Africa. None of us had much idea of what we were in for. Though Southern…
As far back as I can go in my memory, I remember my father talking about his dad dying at age fifty-seven. No Cunningham male had lived beyond that age, which meant my father was in his mid-twenties when his father died. Just before he turned fifty-seven and I was in my mid-twenties, Dad went…
My congregation got to meet in person for the first time in three weeks and we were glad to see each other. That is was also a Communion Sunday made it even more meaningful. My sermon was in conversation with Matthew’s account of the first section of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which is more…
Somewhere in the night I woke to remember I had not written. The day was full. Ginger and Rachel were driving back from the funerals in Birmingham, I cooked lunch for our UCC clergy group (as I do the first Thursday of every month), other food to deliver, and we had our regular Thursday Night…
Mary and Martha have been compared for years. Maybe there’s a different way to look at it. ___________________________ I find it interesting that Luke tells the story of Jesus’ visit to Mary and Martha’s house right after the parable of the Samaritan that we read last week. We don’t have any real indication that one…

A beautiful, loving tribute, Milton. I wish I had had the privilege of knowing your father, but from knowing you, I can see how his legacy lives on.
Thanks, Martha.
How perfectly beautiful and inspiring. Although I never met your Father, I feel I came to know him through this tribute to him. May the Peace of the Lord be always with you.

You two would have liked each other, Julie.

Loved watching the slide show, but even more enjoyed having you to the right on my screen, watching and smiling.
Your collection of photos, accompanied by the special music, is a truly lovely and loving tribute to your amazing dad, Milton. Thank you so much for sharing with us. It’s apparent that you are like him physically as well as in your way of relating to your world.
nicely done my friend, very nicely done.
What a moving, sweet tribute to your dad, Milton.

Thankful that we are Looking for a City!
So sweet. You have so much of your dad in you. Love you.
Lost my Dad April 24 of last year. Visited the cemetery yesterday for the first time since then. My son, who missed the service, gave a spontaneous eulogy for himself and his sister. It was exactly what I hoped would happen. Feeling a deep connection with you this morning. This is wonderful and the music is perfect.
Thanks, David.
Peace
Milton
Honor and Gratitude. That’s what comes through for me. How much we grow to resemble our parent!
