grief biscuits
I saw the leftovers
when I opened the fridge
two baked sweet potatoes
missed or ignored but not
yet past their usefulness
so I made some biscuits
because I needed to
make something of today
in the face of war and
the hunger of dead friends
you can’t make a biscuit
without getting messy
some of the flour will stick
to you like sadnesses
or sometimes shards of joy
I made our breakfast
when they were done adding
leftover pork on mine
and fried chicken on yours
and now we face the day
and the war and dead friends
with the taste of biscuits
on our lips and butter
which will not sustain us
for long I’ll keep cooking
